CC3HelloWorld demo app, if I change the following line in

to your code:

CGImageRef imageref = image.CGImage;
self.backdrop = [CC3Backdrop nodeWithTexture: [CC3Texture textureWithCGImage: imageref]];
everything works as expected.
Since you're testing with a
PNG, have you tried loading the texture directly from file, using
[CC3Texture textureFromFile: @"box_1.png"], to see if there is any difference?
The all-black is usually an indication that lighting is broken, or the color of your object is black. Are other objects appearing as you expect?
